Baby Favorites: Part 3

Ointments, Creams and Pastes:  One thing I didn't know - I'm sure this is common knowledge to all Mommies, but no matter how much baby sitting I did (a whole lot) I never had this explained or did I learn this.  But you should always use an ointment, paste or cream when changing a diaper and not just baby powder.  We didn't know and alternated between both when Naomi was first born and she got a really bad rash.  We then only used an ointment and it went away and she didn't get another till she was 5 months old and eating solids.  And even that was only caused by the Carrots.  Or her sitting in her poo for too long (when she started sleeping through the night).

When she got her first really bad open sore one I went on a massive diaper cream/ointment hunt.  I had to find which one worked!  Amazingly the best thing was lots of nakey time and lansinoh (did you know it's not just for boobies?) right on the owie, then I put the thickest cream I could find.  I changed her diaper every 2-3 hours and have continued with that.  I tried out two different Desitin paste's/cream's (the two tubs you see) and found that the light blue "rapid relief" comes off easily.  I wanted something that didn't.  So I found the purple tub "maximum strength" (also super expensive.. yikes) and that was wonderful!  It didn't come off easily (which means you use quite a bit of diaper wipes during diaper changes) so that when she pood or peed it would stay.

Once her rash was gone I went back to Aquaphor during the day (it's a clear ointment and is easy to remove and does a good job of protecting) since I change her diaper every 2-3 hours.  Then at nights I put the purple thick cream on and it's still there in the morning with her super full wet and or poopy diaper!  That's my diaper cocktail.

I like triple paste, too, but it's uber expensive as well, but only a few bucks more than the purple Desitin so I may try it once I'm out of that tub.  I haven't seen what all the hoopla is about with ButtPaste.  I've used it and it comes off pretty easily. But maybe the tub is thicker paste like the Desitin tubs?

Mommies, share your thoughts!

Wow, you have had to deal with a lot of diaper rash. I guess I don't have a whole lot to say since Brady has only had bad diaper rash maybe once or twice and it never really got too bad. I really like the desitin in the tube when his diaper rash starts to get bad and I LOVE the butt paste for every day use. I think I just like that it's not too thick and I don't have to use a bunch of wipes. Like I said though, haven't really had a lot of problems with bad diaper rash so this probably isn't too helpful :)

I really like these posts, by the way. It's fun to compare what things have worked for me and what works for other people.

I love Balmex. With Connor I never had to deal with a diaper rash until he was 1. Yes it great. But Tiana has had a lot and Balmex works great for me. I love it.

Desitin didn't/doesn't work for Jordynn, I had to get A&D diaper cream, and I love butt paste!! A&D worked the best for me though, would almost instantly reduce redness and her pain. :) love it.

Gingers only had one or two rashes... but butt paste cleared them right up so thats my vote.

I always loved the eucerin cream followed by the aquaphor...my pediatrician told me if they are having frequent diaper changes with a rash, you can use vaseline because it is so cheap and works really well.

I like the purple desitine in the tube. I didn't think it was that expensive and it stays on and is really thick. Butt paste never worked for us either. but I don't use any sort of ointment or anything on a daily basis. only when the diaper rash comes and then I stop when it goes away. but they don't get them very often...so my tubes last FOREVER. I think I still had one leftover from Cambree that I use for Bridger. So it is normal to not have known about ointments, because I am a mommy and I rarely use them!!!

I actually never had to use anything on Annika's little booty. Guess we got lucky!

Tiffany - the tub is expensive. The tube isn't so bad, but the tub is like 23 bucks or something like that.

Amy - you are lucky!

wow that is expensive. Is the tub different then the tube?

Desitin creamy is good stuff for diaper rash.... goes on smoother than the regular desitin, so it doesn't hurt their little rash bums.... and aquaphor is Josh's best friend... he still gets eczema. We've pretty much tried everything under the sun for Josh and the rashes he has had his entire life. I'm sure you remember all of that :) Well, it has cleared for the most part with age, but he still has flare ups, and aquaphor is what we use the most. Hopefully you won't have problems like his with Naomi as she grows!!!
